Why DWAI exists
Deaf women and girls often encounter overlapping barriers: gender discrimination, audism, inaccessible health communication, stigma, violence and limited participation in decisions that affect them.
DWAI responds by combining accessible information, community education, direct advocacy and partnership. The goal is not to speak over Deaf women, but to strengthen the space, tools and systems that allow their own voices to lead.
Our compass
Deaf women and girls should speak for themselves and be heard.
Information and services must be usable, not merely available.
Every person deserves safety, respect and informed choice.
Those closest to a barrier should help lead its removal.
Our approach
DWAI links lived experience with the people, policies and resources that can make access real.
We centre the lived experience and leadership of Deaf women and girls, with communication that is accessible and respectful.
Community knowledge helps identify the barriers in health, safety, education, justice and public participation that need to change.
We connect communities with health workers, schools, public institutions and partners who can act on those barriers.
We advocate for inclusive budgets, trained personnel, accessible information and policies that continue beyond a single project.
